The male bechdel test: the Kuku test
Reviews for the new Ghostbusters 2016 movie are coming out, and aparently the movie is full of male bashing, portraying every single male character as an asshole, stupid, or both. That made me remember how movies and tv shows continously portray men as stupid, assholes, unreliable, deadbeat dads, murderers, rapists, and outright disposable, while women are always inteligent, reliable, good and valuable. So i had the idea of doing a “male Bechdel test”; the Kuku test. This is intended as a joke. Even if all these things DO indeed happen A LOT, to the point that you would have to eliminate most movies in existance to pass this test, that doesn’t men those movies are trying to be sexist, or the industry hates men; the same that it’s not against women because they don’t pass the stupid Bechdel test. All of those things are a consecuence of gynocentrism and political correctness, that makes men want to act in benefict of women (and thus watching products in which the protagonists save a loved one) and media to show women as superior and perfect to avoid any backlash. Also time limitations imply that stories are usually simple and straightforward, like a Damsel in distress, and characters don’t speak about anything not related to the movie story itself and it’s characters. This is specially relevant for action movies, where fights consume most of the time, and are prefered by men. Of course there are particular movies with sexism towards women, and others with sexism towards men. Like Ghostbusters :).

great one
Nice twist on the original.
Woah. This strip needs to be spread like a cats video, NOW!
How often do women even have conversations that don’t drifter into men and sex?
It surely must be a very small porcentage of woman to woman small talk.
So if this bechdel schmuck was honest (What would not happen as it would be strategical suicide) he would have to say something like: “Look, we specifically want all writers out there to portray women as unrealistically as possible because feminism demands it. Just do it!”
A “male” counterpart would be demanding that writers can’t portray men talking about not only women and sex but also about alcohol drinking and any form of sport or action-oriented entertainment. I guess feminists would want that too as they are utterly disgusted that men are allowed to choose their topics of interest based on our instincts and not in left-wing policies.
A movie can pass the Bechdel test if it has two women in bikinis talking about fashion.
“A movie can pass the Bechdel test if it has two women in bikinis talking about fashion”. Yes. It’s not about feminism, it’s about female representation in movies.
A list of movies that pass this “male bechdel test”: https://www.imdb.com/search/title?genres=drama&groups=top_250&sort=user_rating,desc
If you disagree, tell me which movies from the list don’t pass and how.
“Shawshank Redemption”: Men werent portrayed as disposable and didn’t act for women’s benefit. The fathers weren’t portrayed as stupid, useless or incompetent (as far as I remember, it didn’t portray fathers at all). The movie didn’t relate everything negative to males and positive to females. Passes.
A movie that did portray fathers; “Field of Dreams”. Men weren’t portrayed as disposable or acted for women’s benefit. The fathers weren’t portrayed as stupid, useless or incompetent. The movie didn’t relate everything negative to males and positive to females. So it passes.
It also passes the reverse Bechdel test. It has two or more named male characters who talk to each other of something else than women. (Or sex, alcohol, any form of sport or action-oriented entertainment). It doesn’t pass Bechdel test.
Godfather trilogy. All three movies pass.
The Dark Knight. Pass
Once upon a time trilogy. Pass
Lord of the Rings trilogy. Pass
And you can think of only a few? 😀
Gabriel Santos, Bechdel was a she. And she said that she only goes to see movies that pass those three conditions. She didn’t say “because if they do, it’s a feminist movie and I can endorse it”. That would be stupid, because passing a Bechdel test really is as easy as having two named female characters dressed in bikini discussing fashion. It has very little to do with feminism. She didn’t say she wants movies to portray women in a certain way. She just said that that’s her personal criteria to choose movies to watch. It doesn’t get more honest than that.
Also, I would say you base your ideas of what is a realistic portrayal of women on movies instead of real life. In real life we have conversations that don’t drift into men and sex quite often. Most of our conversations are about not men. We talk about our hobbies, our lives and our feelings (and we do have other feelings than being in love with some guy.), we talk about our jobs, we talk about our health, we talk about money, and hopes and dreams and fears and worries, we talk about clothes and food and books and cats and all kinds of things not-men. But, how would you know, you probably have never listened to a woman in your life. (And I don’t assume you will listen to one now either :-D)
I really don’t care what your interests are. Feminism isn’t about male interests. It’s about women, what women are “allowed” to do and what women are interested in. We want more movies with women, not less movies with men. I’m fine with you only watching movies you think pass this kuku-test. There’s plenty of those being made. You don’t need to see the new Ghost Busters or Fury Road or the like.
The worst part about this comment is not that it misses the point, but that it’s so lacking in self awareness that it could be used to completelly debunk the betchdel test but you didn’t even realize it.
It matters not, i noticed you’ve been posting walls of text across several media of mine. I haven’t bothered to read them; the first one was enough to see you’re a retard, and my experience tells me people who do that are obsessive stalkers who just respond to everyone in the comments like an autist. So i’ve added you to my very sort list of blocked people.

It was at this moment Ketutar knew, she fucked up.
……………..Godfather?
Ya know I was gonna leave a wall of text but nah. This wasn’t obviously made by a man and based on the response to Ketutar’s REALLY valid points and lack to address Gabriel Santos’ really self-absorbed comment, I know I have no chance of changing anyone’s mind. Y’all just get really under my skin from your lack of willingness to discuss this
Thank you for your understanding.
What exactly do you believe posting a few movies that pass the test shows? If I posted a similar list for the female test, you would simply dismiss it, no matter how many examples it provided, and you would say something like “This isn’t representative of the broader culture”. You know this is true, so don’t bother trying to deny it. So, given that it’s obvious that you don’t actually care about a genuine discussion or acting in good faith, why should anyone show you the same courtesy?
Yup, those are indeed words ngl.
It’s funny cause in two lines you manage to tell us more about how sexist you are than in a wall of text XD
Which of ketutar’s points do you believe were valid? Be specific.
